Answer

During any significant weather event, the priority of my department is to ensure the safety of both my staff and the public.

Every event causes damage to parts of the road network within the North on both main arterial routes and smaller minor and rural roads. Due to the volume of reports during such events, my department prioritises informing the public of significant road closures via Traffic Watch NI, but does not hold records of each individual closure or the duration of such a closure.

Due to the widespread nature of rail and bus services across the region, the impact of storms will vary depending on the location.

The most recent Storm Amy led to severe disruption across the network on 3rd October 2025 from 5pm onwards with bus services in the North West cancelled from 6pm onwards. All services were fully restored the next day. Rail services were also impacted with a suspension of all services from 5pm on 3rd October, and partial suspensions on 4th.

Storms Eowyn, Darragh, Bert and Ciaran all led to severe and widespread disruption to the bus and rail network.

As a result of a power outage caused by Storm Eowyn, the Strangford Lough Ferry service was unable to operation from 5pm on 24 January until 9am on 25th January 2025.
